As the subject site is embraced by a strong presence of its traditional Latvian milieu, ‘Poetry in Motion’ draws inspiration towards the natural and the rhythmical flow each element imposes on the immediate and surrounding landscape. Due to the nature of the brief, it was inevitable that the proposed design not only adopts the art of poetry, but also amalgamates numerous imaginative elements that combine to create a nexus between the organic and the world’s inherent geometrical influence that shapes society today. One particular method of poetry implemented within the design, is referred to as “Concrete Poetry”; the conveyance of poetry through visual means, using typographical methodology. This methodology has informed the site layout inspired by the linear river that flows through Pavilosta; connecting to the Baltic Sea.

In congruence with the Elizabethan era, ‘Poetry in Motion’ has translated the rhyming scheme of the Elizabethan sonnet into poetic buildings that have been figuratively stressed and unstressed synonymous with iambic pentameter and the ABAB CDCD EFEF GG structure. The rhythmical flow of the natural elements of the surrounding landscape is then replicated and embedded within the design whereby the travelling poets embark on an expedition within the site where they experience these natural elements with each structure they encounter on the raised pathway. The geometric structures are submerged within various elements of the landscape.

The Earth buildings are sunken within the earth; the Air buildings are elevated above it, and the Water buildings engulfed by the lake spilling throughout the site. With all the immediacy and presence of nature, the poets’ senses are evoked and awakened, prompting innovative thought and achieving poetic enlightenment.

As the dynamic paths flow through and above the site; interrupted only by the static geometric structures; the inert current nature of the site is thus brought to life and transforms into an inviting haven for the perpetually wandering poets seeking personal and professional growth. As emerging poets living in a rapidly evolving world where poetry has been overrun by a compulsion towards instant gratification, they therefore immerse themselves in a setting isolated from the surrounding world; free of the commotions of any metropolis.

The proximity of the town of Pavilosta provides travelling poets with the needed resources for their accommodation at the huts as well as the social interaction required to develop a deeper understanding of the local people, culture and traditions whilst similarly contributing to local knowledge.

As part of our ongoing commitment to helping university students and research groups we have enjoyed being part of the design process for 'ARTEMIS’ - a final submission for a group of property economics students from the University of Technology Sydney.

“Luxury living at an affordable price…Artemis aims to inspire a renewed appreciation for living, encouraging a healthy lifestyle that compliments busy schedules within the heart of Cherrybrook NSW.”

Artemis has the potential to curate activation of space in a high-quality domain to the public. Through the introduction of a mixed use precinct, the overall diversity can be maximised with an inter-generational approach.
